Two recent surveys have looked at chief librarian’s salaries. Here is a clip from the CCL Outlook: Newsletter of the Council of Chief Librarians California Community Colleges - v. 18 no.5 April 2008:
The CIO Board hosts a website at: http://www.ccccio.org/. Interestingly enough, a CIO did an informal survey on library directors and the results are linked on the CIO home page. The survey asked the following questions.
Is the Library Director:
1. Faculty or Administrative Position
2. If faculty, months per year
3. Classification
4. Other areas of responsibility assigned to this position
5. Salary Range
25 colleges responded and 14 directors are administrators while 10 were faculty members.
My survey asked very similar questions of chief librarians:
1. FTES
2. Administration/Management, or Faculty
3. Months per year
4. Hours per week
5. Annual base salary
29 responded, of whom 15 were administration/management, 13 were faculty, and 1 was 50/50 admin/faculty. Here is a summary of the responses:
1. FTES (Fall 2006) ranged from 465 to 14,000 with an average of 4,934
2. 15 (51.7%) administration/management, 13 (44.8%) faculty, 1 (3.4%) 50/50 admin/faculty
3. 18 (62.1%) 12 months, 3 (10.3%) 11months, 7 (24.1%) 10 months, 1 (3.4%) 277 days
4. 13 (44.8%) 40 hours, 5 (17.2%) 35 hours, 11 (37.9%) ranged from 30 to 40 with an average of 35
5. Ranged from $63,000 to $141,000 with an average of $91,40; admin/mgt ranged from $79,685 to $141,000with an average of $113,041; faculty ranged from $63,000 to $99,796 with an average of $80,010
Questions I didn’t ask were “other areas of responsibility assigned to this position” (as in the CIO survey), number of years with the district, and extra pay such as stipends, etc., which would affect salary.
Thanks to all of you who work so hard for your students, and special thanks for the 29 who took precious time to respond to my survey!
